Tau Cross

Welcome to the BSCD website. Remarkably, across time and a long and perhaps mysterious journey in life, you have arrived here. You have found this site or perhaps it has found you. It is no accident that this is so.  Hoping that drawing you here would change your life and bring you closer to God.

The Rule of the brothers and sisters is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. We should be troubled about nothing except this all encompassing rule. All that matters is that one be created anew.

What is the meaning of the TAU CROSS?

BSCD is a community group at St John the Baptist Parish in Jersey City.

We are the domestic expression of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity, a Religious Community with the motherhouse in Arkansas, where the Monastic Expression lives.  We were founded by John Michael Talbot in the 1980’s when a number of new communities were started; we are one of the few who have survived.  We are Franciscan-based, and incorporate single and married, male and female, which is modeled on some of the older Communities in Ireland and Europe in the 1400’s.  As Domestics, we live in our own homes and support ourselves.  We meet regularly for prayer, teaching and fellowship, and once a year the domestic groups, called cell groups, from the NorthEast Region meet in a Gathering.

Both the Domestic and Monastic expressions follow the same Rule and Way of Life and have the same Minister General.  Our mission is to help each member grow in his/her love union with Jesus in a life of conversion and penance by means of readings, sacraments, silence and solitude.  We start out as Friends of the Community, and if God calls us into deeper relationship in Community, we move through the stages of Postulancy, Novitiate, Temporary Vows and then Life Vows, which can take 5 years or more.  Many stay at the level of Friends.

For us, Chastity is faithfulness to one’s state of life, married or single.  Poverty is simplicity in all things as opposed to the commercialism of modern life, and Obedience is to the Church and then to the Rule.  Silence and solitude are attitudes we let God build up in us so as to be able to hear His voice speaking to us, to be aware of Him at all times, whether we are alone or in a group.

We urge all to join in the Church’s prayer life several times a day by praying some of the Prayer Offices of monastic and priestly life.  These are available on-line as well in books called breviaries.

Here at St John the Baptist Church, we currently meet the 2nd and 3rd Monday evening each month at 7:30 pm in the chapel.  We start with prayer and then praise music, followed by a teaching or a sharing, then a meditation called Breath Prayer—a silent time of praying in union with the body’s respitory system that comes to us through the Eastern Christian tradition, then intercession.  We also try to meet once a month in either the rectory or a local restaurant for an informal time together.

We seek an ever-deepening love with Jesus and for us, the journey with Him and into Him is a joyous life---we hope you will join us in this.  Those who do join us have found that as time goes on, their relationship with Jesus and with themselves does indeed grow.
